POLICY REGARDING CHEM 212 EXAMS         ....effective FEBRUARY 22, 2013

The following guidelines will be strictly adhered to for the semester.

        1. Students must place all backpacks and supplies around the perimeter of the room. THIS INCLUDES COATS, UMBRELLAS, LAPTOPS, ETC.
        2. Cell phones must be turned off and placed inside backpacks prior to the exam starting.
        3. No baseball hats, caps, etc. This applies to males and females.
        4. Students are not allowed to keep hoods pulled over their heads during the exam.
        5. No bluetooth in ear, no iPods, no iPads, etc.
        6. A valid GMU ID is required for all students. State issued driver’s license, military ID, credit cards showing face are not considered acceptable forms of ID. The student’s face must be clearly recognizable on the GMU ID. The G# must also be easily read and leave no room for confusion.
        7. STUDENTS ARE NOT TO WEAR SUNGLASSES DURING EXAMS.
        8. No IN and OUT once the exam begins.
        9. Proper erasure of incorrect choices are the responsibility of the student and should be done prior to turning the answer sheet in.
        10. EVERYONE STARTS THE EXAM AT THE SAME TIME.
        11. LATE ARRIVALS will not be allowed to take the exam. Any student arriving more than 3 minutes after the exam begins will not be given an exam. A score of zero will be recorded for the exam.
        12. Makeup exams will not be given.
        13. Students will have different versions of the exam. Students with the same color exam cannot sit next to each other.
        14. It is your responsibility to show up at the exam with the necessary tools (answer sheet, pencil, calculator, etc.). Calculators will not be shared nor will others be interrupted once the exam commences for you to seek out necessary materials. Programmable calculators are strictly forbidden during the final exam...
        15. Scratch paper will be provided, therefore students should only have their GMU ID, calculator, and green scantron answer sheet on their desks prior to the exams being passed out.
        16. Students must present their GMU ID when turning in the scantron answer sheet and exam.
        17. At the end of the exam period, when there is a line to turn in the exam material no students should be talking OR writing. These actions will be considered an honor code violation and treated as such.
        18. Budget your time wisely during the exam; do not spend excessive amounts of time on problems that are more challenging.  Answer those that you can and return to the more difficult problems, time permitting, after maximizing your performance on the easier problems.
        19. Students should have the following information legibly written on the scantron answer sheet (Last Name, First Name), G#, Date, Version of the Exam, Course & Section.
        20. Multiple-choice based exams will not be re-graded in the event that the student fails to properly erase an undesired answer, or if a student chooses to darken more than one oval/box.
        21. The following items are to be deposited upon completion of the final exam:  Scan-Tron answer sheet, the original exam void of marks, etc., and all scratch-paper.
        22. Any student who does not surrender the required items during the collection period at the call for all exams will receive a grade of "zero" for the exam.  Exam items are not to be turned in as I am exiting the lecture room nor are final answers to be darkened in while congregating around the desk as others are turning in answer sheets. Once the call for all answer sheets has been made there is to be no more writing  or making marks on exam answer sheets.  Students should not hold discussions of any type while waiting to turn in answer keys.  Those in violation will be referred to the HONOR COMMITTEE.
        23. Cheating (information sharing) during quizzes and exams can result in dismissal from the university for a period of time as deemed appropriate by the honor committee.
        24. It is advisable that you circle the answer on the original exam that corresponds to the oval/box that is darkened on the answer sheet. Intentions to darken one of the answers is not grounds for re-grading. Your grade will be solely determined based upon your selection. Be sure you are filling in the correct answer on the answer sheet.  A technique that works for many students is to circle the answers of choice on the exam sheet and transfer the answers to the Scan-Tron answer sheet after fully deciding on answers to the attempted problems.  This process will eliminate the problem of incomplete erasures and lower exam scores.
        25. There is one and only ONE correct answer to each multiple choice question. Debates and discussions ad nauseum and ad infinitum will not be entertained. A second answer will not be scored correctly to satisfy one individual, nor will a second answer be considered correct because you pleaded your case/answer selection with another faculty member in the department. Keep in mind that, not only at GMU, but in the real world, your attitude determines your altitude.
        26. Exam dates were included on the course syllabus on the first day of class. Poor time management does not constitute a justifiable reason to reschedule an exam. If you have papers due in other classes, budget your time wisely and do not expect to be excused due to lack of sleep before the chemistry exam.
        27. College level courses are designed for mature individuals.  Do not have your parent(s) calling to defend your poor time management with additional excuses for failure to show up at an exam or for missing a quiz.  Your grade in the course is determined by YOUR performance, not that of your parent(s) or other relatives.
        28. ***If you have paperwork registered with ODS, it is your responsibility to secure signatures and hand deliver the form to ODS prior to the exam date-----at least 5 days prior to the exam date and time.
        29. ***If you are a student athlete and, due to scholarship requirements for activity and events, need to have an exam re-scheduled the information must be presented at the beginning of the semester (for regularly scheduled events out of state) and at least one week prior to the exam (for competition in quarter finals, semi-finals, etc.).
